How to Put a Hook on a Fishing Pole

Fishing is a fun and relaxing activity. It lets you enjoy your surroundings and helps to calm your mind. This is a slow sport which you can play in any season but only if you know the proper techniques. Like knowing different parts as to how to put a hook on a fishing pole or how to cast a lure and many more.

Many people think fishing is very easy you just need to throw the lure and you are done, but it is not like that. The two key features you need for fishing is patience and skill.

You need to know what type of lure to use for catching which fish, which equipment you need for which season, how to assemble the fishing parts and how to hold a fishing pole. Here we will be discussing to put a hook on a fishing pole and why you need to put it in the right way.

Process and Steps on How to Put a Hook on a Fishing Pole

The key to putting a hook properly on a fishing pole is all about learning some good knots. Here I will be discussing some popular knots which you can use for putting different types of hooks on your fishing pole.

1. Clinch Knot is a Good Way to Put a Hook on a Pole

For making this knot take your fishing line and a hook and feed the line through the eye of the hook. If you have a proper kind of fly reel, the process shouldn’t be that tough.

But for most cases, you should follow some steps for making a clinch knot.

Process to Follow

Now put your index finger over the top of the hook and grab the tag end. Then, wrap the tag end of the fishing line around itself five times; you can wrap less if you are using a heavier mono.

Wrap the tag end around the mainline by using middle finger and my thumb to pinch-hit on the hand; remember you need to keep the mainline taut with your other hand. Keep doing the same process till 5th time and then you will get a loop.

Now take the tag end, put it through the loop and hold it. This part is really important that you lubricate the knot and you will have to do this with any type of knot that you use for fishing line. This is because without lubricating fishing line will bind on itself and it will break; especially fluorocarbon.

Most of the Fluorocarbon line has the tendency to bind up fast unless you are using the best line of the market. For lubricating the knot just use your saliva, this is the best and faster way of lubricating. Now pull the mainline and you will see the knot snugging right up.

Things to Remember

Remember you should never pull the tag end off any knot, always pull the mainline because while fishing that is where the pressure is going to come from. Now cut the excess part of the tag end and you are ready to use it.

2. How to Tie a Hook on a Fishing Pole Using Loop Knot

To know how to put weight and hook on a fishing line, you need to first understand different fishing hook types and sizes. And then you need to understand different fishing loop knot.

This knot is also called surgeon knot. With this knot, you can attach dropper weights and hooks for creating dropper rigs. This is a very useful knot as you can attach a new hook or change hook sizes without having to retie the knot.

Steps for Making Loop Knot

For tying this knot take a tag line and turn it around so that it goes over the main part of the leader, it should be about three to four inches. After that cinch down the tip and put a bit of a pressure to make a pointy shape; now you will get a double or over the line.

Now hold the pointy area with your left hand and cinch down the tag end with your right hand. Afterward, twist in a way so that it forms a loop for making this loop, bend the line inwards with two hands and pinch it down with your right hand.

Now you have a pointy shape tip and a loop. After that, take the pointed tip through the loop and pull it tight so that we get a single overhand knot; do it two times. To finish the knot, grab all four strands and pull them tight. See proper ways to make the line last longer.

So, you will see the loop creating a figure 8. For tightening the tag let go the tag and put your finger in the loop and pull the mail line and the loop as hard as you can. Cut the tag end and now you have it; the loop knot.

How to Use this Knot with Hooks

This knot is best for octopus hook. For using this knot take your hook and put the pointy knot through the eye of the hook and pull it out till the figure it.

Now push the hook through the loop in the line so that the loop goes around the point and let the knot sit on the shank of the hook.

Pull it tight and you will see the knot forming a bond with the hook. For changing the hook just push the loop of the line down and then take the hook around so that it is no longer in the knot. Now you can again use the knot for any other hook or for attaching weights.

4. Making Palomar Knot for Adjusting Hook on a Pole

Palomar Knot is known for its easy and efficient fishing experience. In different types of fishing like trout fishing, steelhead, and river walleye fishing, this knot is used vastly.

Process for Making a Palomar Knot

For making a proper Palomar knot it is recommended to take a six inches long line. To make the knot, hold the tag line end and turn it around so that it goes over the main part of the leader; here you will get a double line.

Now twist both the ends to form a loop. To put the hook, you should take the loop and let it pass through the eye of the hook. Before doing this step always remember to lubricate your tag line with saliva.

Now hold the hook in the middle of the loop so that the hook can swing freely. Now for making an overhand knot pull the hook through and make a big loop and make a knot the way you tie your shoelace.

Remember, you should not twist the line otherwise your knot will not be a good one. Now for tightening the knot, again lubricate the line using and pull the hook through the eye and for holding the hook better pull both ends of the line; saliva.

Attaching the Hook with the Fishing Pole

Once you feel that the knot is enough tight you can start attaching the hook with the fishing pole. If you are into frog fishing, you should use the knot for attachment of the items to the frog fishing rods.

In other rods, attachment is pretty similar.

Attach the hook with the pole and cut the tag end and you are ready to fish. A tip for beginners: making larger loops are better if it is your 1st time making the loop.

5. Knotless Knot for Easy and Effective Adjustment

Take a piece of leader and feed it through the front of the eyelet and wrap it around the shank seven to eight times. Now start feeding the leader back through the back of the eye. This is it! It is a very simple yet effective knot which is very famous in the UK and Europe.

6. Stinger Knot for Better Pike, Cat and Shark Fishing

For making this knot 1st you need to make a knotless knot. After that take another hook and feed it backward; here the line will come in through the back. Then you again tie a knotless knot and then again feed it through the hook eye.

Stinger Knot for Better Pike

This knot is for tying two hooks in tandem. This knot is usually used for pike fishing, catfishing, shark fishing, etc. With this knot you can put multiple baits (like picking a crankbait with other baits) or put a large bait with two hooks; large baits can help you catch larger fishes easily.

Process of Attaching Hooks and Other Parts on the Pole

Now that you have learned some knots, it is time to learn the process of attaching hook and other parts. After you are done putting a hook in your tag line, put a bobber onto your tag.

You should attach the bobber according to the water level. Remember, the distance between the hook, water level, and bobber should be the same.

Now you need to attach split spots between the bobber and the hook. For putting the split spot or weight; hold your tag line and let it go through the narrow place in the middle of it.

This is also called the sinker; this will help your tag line hold its weight and will help it to be in place under the water. Now add your desired bait or lure and you are good to go.

If you own the best fishing rods for salmon, steelhead, or bigger trouts then, putting a hook properly on a fishing pole is very important; if you do not do it properly your hook might come off while fishing and if this happens you will lose your prey as well as your hook.

Also, a loose hook cannot provide you the strength you need while fishing. If you are not a pro in fishing but your hook is properly attached to your pole you might get away with this, but a pro with improper hook has less chance of getting away.

Learning a bunch of good knots is also very important. Better knotting can give you a better hold.

Last Few Words

Learn the knots better after you are done doing that, next thing you want to do is learn how to attach other parts for fishing. Remember only proper hook cannot make you good fisherman or fisherwoman; you need to learn to put other accessories as well.

Last but not least, choosing the best zone for fishing and doing it patiently is also very important. Learn all the necessary steps properly and then go and enjoy fishing to the fullest.
